Why Root Canal Treatment is Necessary?

A root canal is a treatment used to repair the tooth that is decayed or becomes infected. This is a treatment of the pulp that is infected, inflamed, or dead. The pulp is soft substance in the tooth that consists of blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerve.

Root canal treatment, also referred as endodontic treatment is a dental procedure that treats the nerve of the tooth. Endodontics deals with the tooth pull and tissues that surround the roots of the tooth. The treatment can be done by an endodontics or by a general dentist. When a root canal is treated, the pulp of the tooth is removed, and the pulp chamber is filled and sealed in order to prevent the bacteria from entering to it.

How a Root Canal Becomes Necessary

Root canal is just one of the common dental problems that you may have. However, it is unwise to leave the problem untreated as it may lead to more serious problems. Below are the most common reasons why root canal is necessary.

Mild to severe pain is the primary symptom of a root canal. The pain that comes from a tooth needing root canal is specific. If the tooth is alive, it will become highly sensitive to hot and cold, and remain sensitive even if the cold and hot stimulus are taken away. The tooth may start to hurt in the middle of the night, or if the patient is not using the hurting tooth. If the affected tooth is dead, it will hurt whenever the patient uses it to chew, or puts pressure on it.

Another reason why tooth canal treatment is necessary is deep cavity. If the tooth decays and extends down to the pulp, the nerve, connective tissues, and blood vessels will be exposed to bacteria. When this happens, the pulp will get inflamed and will baldy hurt, or worse, the pulp will die and gets decayed. Sometimes, pain will not be present. However, the only way for dentist to get the decayed pulp out of the tooth is by performing root canal.

Traumatic incidents are also among the primary reasons why root canal is necessary. When a tooth is hit by a great force, the nerve of the tooth is severely damaged, and its root will die, eventually. This may happen immediately after the incident, or several years following the trauma. In addition, fractured tooth may also need root canal. However, this is only necessary if the fracture extends deep down the pulp of the tooth.

Repeated dental procedures are also the main reason for a root canal treatment. Sometimes, the pulp of the tooth gets damaged due to repeated drilling. This alone can cause the pulp of the tooth to get inflamed and become extremely painful.

A tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment can last for a lifetime, but because of tooth decay can still happen to treated teeth. It is wise to observe good oral hygiene at all times to avoid recurrence.   Visit Lavorini Dental Care’s dental services page for more information on root canal treatments.
