Oh My! Missing Teeth!

Unlike human hair, teeth cannot be replaced every time and at any moment you desire. Once your adult teeth replaces the deciduous teeth (baby teeth), it can no longer be replaced by another one.  The only way then to remedy tooth loss is if dental treatment is applied.

Sometimes, missing teeth is unavoidable and not so predictable. No one can ever say that they will surely not have missing teeth for the rest of their life. Thus, all of us should be careful and should think about what causes missing teeth.

Causes of Missing Teeth

There are several causes of why a person might have missing teeth. Knowing these causes may help prevent further tooth loss if taken seriously and preventive measures are applied.

  • Poor oral hygiene

Skipping to brush and floss your teeth may increase the risk of having cavities and gum disorders making tooth loss a high possibility. Don’t be afraid to consult a dentist once in six months to make sure that your teeth are healthy.

  • Poor nutrition

Acidic and sugary foods may also initiate tooth decay that will damage the gums, teeth and in most cases increase chances of tooth loss.

  • Poor habits

Tooth grinding every now and then may fracture your teeth making the risk of loosing teeth higher. Smoking and chewing tobacco may also lead to missing teeth for adults.

  • Injury

Playing sports games without the use of a mouth guard can cause tooth loss from encountering direct injury, or any kinds of injury that hurts your jaw or damages your teeth and gums.

How to prevent the occurrence of missing teeth

Missing teeth will not occur instantly without us being aware. Now that we know what causes tooth loss, we can now do something to prevent it:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day  (or thrice if you have the ability)
  • Floss your teeth at least once a day
  • Use oral solutions after every meal or as necessary and prescribed
  • Schedule a dental check-up at least once every six-months
  • Eat healthy foods and avoid the sugary or acidic ones
  • Stop grinding and bumping your teeth with one another
  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco
  • Use a mouth guard when playing sports or when you have teeth grinding issues when sleeping
  • Avoid injuries as much as you can

Having missing teeth is not pleasing to see or feel. Once you have missing teeth, you may feel uncomfortable and uneasy, for example, when smiling at other people. You may not be able to do a lot of biting, especially if the ones missing is in the front. Although missing teeth can now be managed by dental treatment, it wouldn’t feel the same as real teeth. Therefore, it is much better to prevent it early on than having to fix it in the future.
