How to Keep Your Teeth Clean When You Don’t Have a Toothbrush

When it comes to caring for your teeth, you’re dedicated. You brush and floss daily, visit the dentist at least once a year and follow all the tips he or she gives you for healthy teeth and gums. Did you know that there are some things that you can do to keep your teeth clean even without the traditional tools? Here’s how.

Disposable Brushes – These miniature tooth cleaners come individually wrapped and already contain a dab of toothpaste that is activated when you begin brushing. You don’t even need water! Stock up on these and store them in your purse, briefcase, glove box, desk drawer and anywhere else you might find yourself craving a good teeth cleaning.

Brushing Wipes – No toothbrush at all – not even a disposable one? No problem. Simply carry a package of these handy brush and go wipes, which contain a special no-water-needed formula that cleans teeth and removes plaque with a simple wipe. These are made by various brands and can be found in the oral health care aisle of your local grocery store. Or, ask your Oakland dentist to recommend one to try.

Floss/Floss Picks – In the absence of a brush or wipes, flossing is still a highly effective way to keep your mouth fresh and your teeth clean. This process helps to remove food particles and bacteria from between your teeth and along the gum line. Rinse Thoroughly – If you don’t have access to any of the items listed above, it can be helpful to simply rinse your mouth thoroughly after eating or drinking. This can help to dislodge any food particles that are trapped in your teeth and cut down on bacteria in the mouth.

Avoid Certain Foods/Drinks – When all else fails, and you know you won’t have access to adequate dental equipment, make a conscious effort to stay away from certain foods and drinks that may cause buildup or bad breath. Avoid strong flavored foods, such as those containing garlic, or that have a lot of spices that can get caught between your teeth. Also stay away from dark drinks, such as wine, black coffee or cola. These can stain the teeth when they aren’t brushed away immediately.

Of course, nothing takes the place of a good old toothbrush and toothpaste, and regular visits to your Oakland dentist. For those times when you can’t rely on your regular routine, however, these simple alternatives will have you smiling pretty – whenever and wherever you might be.
